CONSERVATION UPDATE – WILD SUMACO
Wildsumaco Lodge is happening! After nearly 2 years of preparation, in late July ground was broken in Pacto Sumaco for the construction of Wildsumaco Lodge. A retaining wall and footings for the bedroom buildings and the dining room quickly followed. The roof will go on in early September, and floors, walls and other systems should follow quickly.
At present Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary anticipates opening Wildsumaco Lodge doors to guests in November, and are delighted by the response that they have had from individuals and birding tour agencies. They currently have bookings through the end of 2008! Please contact either Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary or Andean Birding.
Wildsumaco's already fine trail system continues to be upgraded and expanded, and the road going there, improved. The birdlist is up to 352 species and climbing, with many rare eastern foothill specialties.
The non-profit Rio Pucuno Foundation, started by the owners of Wildsumaco Wildlife Sanctuary, has been approved by the Ecuadorian government. Through it they accept contributions for forest purchase and conservation in the Sumaco area. Andean Birding is proud to announce that 5% of its profits from tours goes to the Rio Pucuno Foundation to further purchase and protect more forest in the area.
