LESSER SCAUP 1ST RECORD IN 60 YEARS!

Lesser Scaup female. Apparently Tatiana Santander (Aves & Conservacion) had the 1st recent record as well as a male here at Laguna San Pablo and another individual was seen a day later at Laguna Yambo near Salcedo. Amazing to have these individuals appear after 60 years of absence!

Jonas, Dusan Brinkhuizen, Lory Cordova and I twitched this Ecuadorean super-rarity on 7 Mar 2012. Roger Ahlman came barrelling out there later on and is 99% sure he had a Cinnamon Teal flyby! Another rarity here, too bad we missed it. The surge in vagrant Lesser Scaup in C. and S. America as well as Europe indicates increased stress on their population due to as yet unknown factors.
